It has been a very busy month of August for me! It’s so important when planning a summer wedding for the couple to book their photographer as soon as they can, from experience I get booked up really quickly for those popular months. So I will have to share with you some of the weddings I have been to over the last few weeks.
Starting with a wedding for a very cute couple in Norwich at the Oasis Sports and Leisure. A really lovely relaxed photo shoot, the couple wanted some nice shot’s of them as a couple and one or two different shots. The groom loved the idea of the walking shot of him and his groomsmen and I think they all enjoyed the relaxed feel it gave them, a nice alternative to a standing pose. It was nice to do a wedding in the gardens of the Oasis Sports and Leisure, this gave me more space to be creative. I was really pleased with the results.

It’s Maternity time and It’s really hard to pick a few pictures from this shoot, there are so many great ones!

I took time thinking about a lot of different poses and style’s, The black background is something that at a mention a lot of people are not so sure on, because it is not used as much as white. The black however seems to be quite flattering and works really well to focus on the emotion. I used some nice soft lighting, to enhance the softness of the lines. On this shoot I really wanted to achieve a simple but emotive look. I used a technique called selective colour to bring out the vibrant colour of a flower on a black and white image it worked really well although I also love the original in colour too, so both images made the gallery.

A great shoot and great couple, a huge thanks to Hollie and Simon for sharing these moments.

The studio was set the backdrop was down and I was ready and keen to do a maternity shoot for one of the loveliest couples I have met. I photographed their wedding a couple of years ago and that was a great day! The ceremony was in Houghton Church on the grounds of Houghton Hall and the reception was at The Ffolks Arms – Hillington www.ffolkes-arms-hotel.co.uk Here a few pictures from that day.

I was really pleased when they approached me do take some maternity photographs for them. It was the second time I was to document special moments in their lives, well it was my privilege. I had great fun going over idea’s of poses and on the day the shoot went without a hitch, I am really pleased with the out come and I can’t wait to see the final edited versions. A few maternity shots to follow shortly, watch this space!

I was pleased to be invited as the wedding photographer for Emily and David’s wedding day at Wolterton Hall near Aylsham.

As soon as I met Emily, David and their baby son over in Hickling, I knew it was to be a great day, they are such a lovely couple. It turned out to be a most wonderfully sunny October day. Emily looked beautiful in her 50′s style dress, a real vintage feel.

Wolterton Hall is a private country hall tucked away in the north norfolk county side. We had the use of the Hall and gardens with a fantastic lake. A truly fantastic setting with it’s grand rooms, amazing fireplaces and the terrace was a perfect spot for after ceremony drinks. The reception was at the dairy barns in Hickling. A farm barn setting with a reception bar and rustic barn beautifully converted. The wedding had a real sense of fun and glamour a great celebration!

The rise in popularity of Facebook, twitter and other Social Media services has had quite an impact on wedding photography over the last few years. Along with the introduction of digital photography, the Internet has changed the way we like to share and communicate with our friends & families.

Many of the couples I meet and work with are now choosing to have their wedding photo’s supplied in a digital format because they prefer to share the images on Facebook than to have them in printed form. I now offer presentation boxed DVD’s & USB flash drives that contain images optimised for online sharing along with a version that contains higher quality images that allow the couple to have their own prints made.

I do of course still provide lovely hand crafted albums and framed prints for anyone who prefers to keep the memories of their big day in a more tactile format, but it’s interesting that the way we all like to share the big experiences in our lives is changing so dramatically.

The trick to being a wedding photographer is being able to be creative with shots, knowing where to take the shots from, thinking quickly and coming up with idea’s on the spot. Thinking ‘how can I make this shot look good’ and knowing the answer without experimenting. At the same time though there are always going to be certain shots that the bride & groom are hoping for and it’s good to know about those in advance.

One thing that I find helps a lot in this regard is to run through shot list with the couple in advance of the big day. Being able to talk to a couple about a shot list gives me the ability to have a better understanding of style of photography they prefer and any particular shots that they are expecting to recieve.

I have complied a typical list of shots below that I would be looking out for on the day.

As you can see there is a lot to think about, I have to pre plan where I have to stand to get the shot I need next and know I’m going to be there on time with the camera and lens that I need. Confidence and experience is a huge factor in being a successful wedding photographer which is why you should always choose a photographer who can work with you to make sure you’re going to get all the shots you’re hoping for from the big day.

Why would you want to photograph the morning of the wedding?

As a wedding photographer taking photographs on the morning of the wedding is a really special time, there’s nerves, clock watching, pampering and usually lots of drinks flowing. It’s mostly the part of the day that is forgotten about, I like to capture all the fine details like dresses hanging ready to be worn, shoes fresh out of the box and also the jewellery and make up being put on. One of the most important parts of the morning is the relationships, a Mother excited for her daughter or a dutiful friend helping in anyway she/he can from zipping up the dress or helping the bride through every doorway she passes.

I love to get myself into position ready to get that shot it might be the bride coming down the stairs or the bridesmaids cheekily giggling with excitement about their part of the day!

Hopefully these pictures taken at dairy barns will help you decide for yourself.

I am always looking for great quality extra’s to offer my clients and I am due to have a meeting with a local picture framing craftsmen (a dying art). I have already visited his workshop and was thrilled by the quality of some of his picture frames. I cannot wait to see what my work looks like in some of his elegantly simple frames.

Quite often in the past many people get quite scared when it comes to framing their photographs. It can be so difficult to get the right frame and the right look you are after. I have decided to collaborate with a local picture framing craftsmen to offer my clients lot’s of different options, which will not only show off my photography to it’s best but will become a timeless memento.
